History & discovery

First described 1984 by Cyril Y. Bowers (with chemist Frank Momany) Origin: Arose from Cyril Bowers' observation in the late 1970s that chemically modified enkephalins released growth hormone without opioid effects; over years of structure-activity work with Frank Momany, he developed GHRP-6, characterized in 1984 as the first synthetic peptide to specifically release GH. Bowers predicted an unknown natural ligand, later found as ghrelin in 1999..

Molecular structure

A synthetic six-amino-acid peptide (His-D-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2) acting on the growth hormone secretagogue receptor.
