What is biological age, really?

Biological age is how old your body is behaving. It can be lower than your calendar age — meaning you're aging slower than the candle count suggests — or higher, meaning your physiology is running ahead of your years. Here's what actually drives it, how the major at-home tests work in 2026, and the levers that genuinely move the number.

The simplest definition

Chronological age is one number: the time since you were born. Biological age tries to estimate something different — how worn or repaired your cells, tissues, and organs are. Two forty-year-olds with the same passport date can be biologically a decade apart.

The most rigorous biological-age models in 2026 use one of two data sources:

The at-home options, compared

1. Epigenetic clocks (blood spot or saliva)

How it works: you mail in a few drops of blood or a saliva sample. A lab reads DNA methylation at hundreds of thousands of sites and runs your data through a published clock. Cost: $200–$500. Cost: typically bundled into a subscription. Strengths: immediate, free or near-free, updates daily, motivating, no blood required. Caveats: directional, not diagnostic — best used as a daily-progress proxy alongside a real lab measurement every 6–12 months.

The levers that actually move biological age

Across major published trials and longitudinal studies, the same five levers keep showing the largest effect sizes — and they're all things you control:

  1. Sleep quality. Consistent deep and REM sleep is the single highest-leverage variable. Aim for the wake time you can hit seven days a week.
  2. Resistance training. Muscle is the most metabolically active tissue you have. Twice-weekly progressive resistance training is a minimum effective dose.
  3. Protein-anchored nutrition. Most adults under-eat protein. Around 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day supports the muscle the resistance training builds.
  4. Glucose stability. Big glucose swings drive inflammation and accelerate methylation aging. Walking after meals and a CGM trial often reveal foods that are quietly spiking you.
  5. Stress regulation. Chronic cortisol pulls on every other system. Breathing practices, HRV biofeedback, and tracked stress load all help.
